Measuring Wallpaper

Learn how to measure your walls accurately so you order the right amount—every time.

Accurate measurements are the first step to a seamless wallpaper installation. Follow this simple guide to determine how much wallpaper you’ll need for your space.

What You’ll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Calculator
  • Pencil and paper
  • A ladder (if you’re measuring tall walls)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Measure Wall Height
Use your tape measure to record the full height of the wall from floor to ceiling, in feet. Write it down.

2. Measure Wall Width
Next, measure the width of the wall from one side to the other. No need to subtract for windows or doors—just measure the entire span.

3. Calculate Square Footage
Multiply the height by the width to get the square footage (SQFT) of the wall. For multiple walls, repeat the process and add up all your totals.

Example: A wall that’s 8 feet tall and 12 feet wide equals 96 SQFT (8 × 12 = 96).

4. Add Extra for Waste
Add 10% to your total square footage to cover waste, trimming, and pattern matching.

Pro Tips:

  • Double-check your measurements before ordering.
  • If your wallpaper has a pattern repeat, you may need additional material.
  • Ordering an extra roll is always a good idea—for touch-ups, mistakes, or future repairs.
